🎹 Roland FP60X: What's New? Updated Review & Demo of Roland FP60X for 2023 🎹
Review is spot on in terms of the speaker sound quality. I've owned several P series over the years and currently have the P-125B. Still prefer the action and sound on the P-125 compared to the P-225 and chose not to upgrade. Appreciate the honest review.
Thank you kindly! We really appreciate that. :)
Hi, in the fp 30x if i connect the piano using usb (A to B) and only those to my computer, the audio will come out of the speaker? or I'd have to use another cable or interface to make it come out of the speakers?
Hi there! The FP30X has a USB audio interface, so you can use it in conjunction with VST plugins and have the audio playback through the onboard speakers. :)
Still think Fantom 0- is the best synth for today not even for Roland but at all. Suck a fantastic sweet spot between price and features. To be honest, I don't know why people still love Nord when there's a lot like Fantom (any of). JunoDS..... hmm, not for me sorry.
The FANTOM-0 series instruments are excellent! The features and value that are packed into these models is quite impressive to say the least. :)
Thank you! I’m a mixing engineer and have recently gotten interested in learning piano. I was looking for a MIDI keyboard with graded weighted keys, but then I realized that digital pianos from Yamaha & Roland might be better options, as these companies have decades of research in making actions close to a real piano. Then I came across Roland’s PHA4 action, so I stopped there, as Roland uses it in their higher-end models, so it must be good.
You're very welcome! The FP10 and FP30X models would be well aligned with what you're looking for. They both double as excellent MIDI controllers thanks to their fantastic actions and sensor systems. :)
Hey Stu, could you do a yamaha nu1xa vs kawai nv5s? It would be wonderful?!?
Hi! Brent here! Thanks for the suggestion! We will do our best to tackle that comparison for you if the opportunity presents. :)
Which would be more realistic in terms of action and sensitivity, this Roland or the Kawai ES120? Thanks for your videos!
It is a matter of personal preference of course, but I would personally say that the FP30X is a more realistic feeling action. :)
We sold our RD88 a month after purchasing it. It had bad note drop outs when doing octave tremolos with the damper pedal down while the right hand was doing some chords or runs. Activating dual tones and playing with the damper pedal down also resulted in severe note drop outs. Is this issue fixed in the RD08?
I'm sorry to hear that you had a bad experience with your RD88. I haven't heard about these issues before, so it sounds like you may have had a bad unit. In any case, I hope that you find a reliable instrument that suits your needs.
Stu and this review made me decide to convince our Church Leadership to purchase the FP30x, glad that we finally have it last December of 2023 and now being used at worship services 🙏😇
Hi! Brent here! That is great to hear! The FP30X is a powerhouse piano for the money. We're very happy to hear that our reviews were helpful through your process. :)
Wow! This was a great comparison video. I love how you explained some of the terms, this is super helpful for a beginner like me. I'm sold on the FP10. Going to get it this weekend!
Thank you! We're glad it was helpful. You definitely can't go wrong with the FP10. It is a wonderful instrument! :)
Casio seems to beat other brands in providing a mock up replica acoustic piano feal playing experience at the various price levels this would be my only reason though for wanting one.
Casio has certainly drawn a line in the sand with their new AP models. They play, sound, and look great! :)
Qualcuno può dirmi se il suono di entrambi è registrato con microfoni ambientali?
We always take a direct line out feed from the piano to capture our audio, unless otherwise noted. If we were using microphones to capture the sound of a digital piano, we generally specify that. :)
I loved the review. Now i am choosing between cn301 and es920. i never played piano, so i am glad that i discovered you channel. So much usefull info!
You're very welcome! Thank you so much - we really appreciate the kind words and support! :)
Cts500..
Thanks for the suggestion! We will do our best to tackle a review of that model. :)
Just got my mp7se. However, How do you adjust keyboard velocity for midi? I thought i would simply adjust the touch curve, but that only effects the onboard sounds and doesnt effect the velocity of a midi piano like a Kontakt piano.
I believe the info that you're looking for should be on page 48 of the MP7SE's user manual, which you can check out here: www.kawai-global.com/data/manuals/MP7SE_EN_R100.pdf
Can you help me choose the right piano for me? I tried few Yamahas and Roland. I prefer Roland action. Local dealer has: hp704 for 2000$ Lx5 for 3000$ I like both, but im not sure lx5 worth that extra money. Then he offered me kawai ca 701 for 2800$, but none kawai was in stock and i couldnt test the action. Is kawai really so amazing or should i be worried and take Roland?
Hi! Brent from Merriam Music here! Thanks for the question. It really comes down to personal preference and subjectivity. The Roland HP704 and LX5 pianos will have a heavier, stiffer touch than the Kawai CA701, but all of these models have wonderful actions and tone engines. They simply offer a different musical experience. I would recommend comparing pianos in person before making a final decision if possible. With that said, you really can't go wrong with either of those Roland models. They're both quite wonderful and the PHA50 action is phenomenal! :)
@@MerriamPianos Thanks for reply. Maybe I will try to look around if I find any ca series kawai.
It is a tribute to your other (oh so wonderfully many) videos that I am able to begin to grasp what sounds I am hearing here ! And had the temerity to go play both these fine instruments in a store, coincidentally . Next , a pianoteq set up and a Nord maybe .. Thankyou . Btw I guessed each correctly too but the last pair were more ambiguous . Brilliant helpful insightful as ever video from you - a huge thanks .
You're very welcome! Thank you kindly for tuning in! We sincerely appreciate the support. :)
Hi Stu, I saw a couple of shorts in YT where the user shows keys from the E50 being too loud from the mechanical key bouncing back..have you experienced this or just was a bad unit this person had?
Hi! Brent from Merriam Music here! Heavier actions have some mechanical key noise associated with them. Acoustic pianos are no different, which can be demonstrated when using an acoustic hybrid piano with a silent feature. As long as the piano's volume is set to a high enough volume (roughly 15% and beyond), the mechanical key noise should not even be audible. There was a batch of Roland PHA4 actions that had some grease issues, which caused louder key noise than usual, but Roland supported those units and has since resolved the issue. The PHA4 action still holds up as one of the most reliable and rewarding actions on the market in my opinion.
@@MerriamPianos thank you Brent, is like I thought... there are some short videos in YT showing this but I guess it was an isolated issue
I like these videos. Thanks. They give me a nice direction to go when heading for the piano store. Truth is, I must lay my own fingers on the keyboard to know it it’s right for me. The good news these days is that the industry is highly competitive, meaning I’m going to get my money’s worth whatever brand I choose. Try-before-you-buy is the way to go.
Thanks so much! We're glad you like the videos. I definitely agree with the sentiments. There are a lot of great brands/models on the market these days and, whenever possible, it is always ideal to test them out in person first. :)
thank you it's very useful...I'm a beginner and I have the Yamaha P 125 but my problem with this piano is I can't control the dynamics of the keys..I don't know is the problem only me or the keys are moving
I'm sorry to hear that you are experiencing issues with the dynamics on your P125. While the rendering of dynamics won't be as advanced as higher-end tone engine and action combinations, you should still be able to control dynamics on your P125.
I keep my 121
The P121 is still a solid instrument of course. :)
@@MerriamPianos good for gigging
Si which one the best here
It all comes down to a matter of musical preference and the context of use. But, all of these pianos present excellent cost-to-value ratios. :)
I like the way you review, and play stuff, its cool :) I hope to get one of these, it sounds great!
Thanks so much! We appreciate you tuning in and supporting our videos! :)
If these top models are just plugged into a daw. Would they sound better than the 90 or 525 or 920 ?
It really depends on the tone engine and sample sets. Some of the top portable digitals have the same tone engines as the top console digital pianos. In some cases though, the top console digital pianos have superior tone engines.
Hey Stu, I recently bought the Casio PX-S5000 but I'm not happy about the speakers, in my opinion they sound kind of tinny and more like a keyboard than an actual piano (it stands freely in my room on a stand). Now I'm thinking about exchanging it for the S6000, because I read it has better speakers, but I'm very unsure about it, for the following reasons: I thought the S5000 would be a perfect fit for me, because I don't really need a lot of crazy features, mainly a good piano sound and feel to practice at home and the portability is very important to me since I play a lot of live shows. I've been researching and sampling digital pianos for weeks now and I'm starting to lose my mind trying to find one that has an authentic feel, a great sound over speakers and connected in a live situation and is portable, too. I mainly use the piano to accompany my singing and unfortunately difficult interfaces tend to scare me away, so I need something low-threshold. It would be so great to hear your opinion about the 5000 vs. 6000 speakers and I'm grateful for any tips regarding other models for my needs in that price range.
Hi! Brent from Merriam Music here! I'm sorry to hear that you're not fully satisfied with the PXS5000's speaker system. It is a simpler dual speaker setup with a lower power rating (16W), so it certainly won't offer as robust of a sound as something with a higher-powered and more sophisticated speaker setup. To that point, the PXS6000 does have a four-speaker array, which is double the power. In my experience, the bass response in particular is much better on the PXS6000. With that said, you could also consider using an external amplifier to enhance the sonic experience of your PXS5000. The Roland KC series amps in particular sound quite good! :)
Quero corrigir o que mencionei sobre o valor do dólar aqui no Brasil, que tivemos uma alta no valor do dólar para 5,67, para cada Real, a nossa moeda corrente, assim, seria de 1.165,43. Na correção correta. Valor em dólar.
Thanks so much for clarifying! And, of course, thank you for tuning in! :)
@@MerriamPianos yes.
O valor, é razoável, e não fica acima dos melhores do mercado, eu vi em duas lojas de instrumentos musicais, pelo preço de 6.608,00, mais ou menos 1.200 dólares, se eu estiver errado, alguém me corrija 😅😅😅😅
Thanks so much for sharing the pricing insights! It is always interesting to hear what the price points of certain models are in different markets. All the best! :)
@@MerriamPianos ok, amigo.
Sounds beautiful. Is this much better than a Schimmel W180? Or is it in the same category?
The A175 is a stunning instrument! It is a category higher than the W180, which is also a tremendous instrument in its own regard of course. :)
Do you know who actually manufactures the PHA50 action, does Roland out source the actual keybed ?
I am not entirely sure as to whether Roland outsources the manufacturing of their actions. I am under the impression that they manufacture them in-house though.
@@MerriamPianos That’s what I thought, I saw a RUclips vid by Mr Keys who reckons that at some point Fatar did some work for Roland early days with synth actions I think
For me p225 …..
That is fair! They are both excellent pianos that offer their own unique musical flavour. It all comes down to a matter of personal preference of course. :)
Very similar sound to c bechstein
There are definitely some parallels for sure! :)
Question. That piano year is before 2016 rigth?
I don't believe so. I believe it is more recent as this video was shot using a floor model in 2022.
C bechstein sound better. more clarity in the sound. Steinway sound is more warm and woody.
The L167 is certainly a tough instrument to compete with. It is a truly stunning piano! :)
You really managed to hold a "stiff upper lip" here...;) - i wouldn´t have...lol really, one can hear (between the notes) that you are an excellent keyboardplayer! - kudos and respect!
The Rockjam RJ561 is a specific instrument with a specific market of course. It is a nice little intro to piano/keyboard, but it is not an instrument that is suitable for serious study on. Thanks so much for tuning in! I'll be happy to pass along your kind words to Stu for you. :)
I've had this piano for a while now. And I myself don't understand why it's so good. The keys are sooooooo heavy or is that just me? I can't seem to play fast pieces without getting tired quick. I don't have this issue on accoustic piano's. Recording on this thing also has flaws for me. The effects like ambience don't get added when you record to mp3. The only other recording option is midi.....
I am sorry to hear you are not enjoying the DP603. It is true that the PHA50 action is quite heavy. However, with that said, heavier actions are more akin to the feel of a concert grand piano with long key sticks. If you'd like to have a lighter feel, you can change the touch sensitivity accordingly. If you're taking a line out feed from the tone engine, you should be capturing all of the ambience and effect settings. With that said, MIDI recording will not capture these details of course.
@@MerriamPianos The sensitivity only changes the maximum press strength and makes it lighter. The minimum weight stays the same so it makes no difference. I've played on concert grands before and they play waaay lighter but a electric piani is ofc not going to perfectly resemble a real grand. For the recording I mean that if you record audio (which is a setting you can change) the piano doesn't record the sound you hear but the base sample which sounds bad on it's own. Ofc you can use a line output but thats just a haste because for my audio interface Ill need 2 outouts one left and one right to make it sounds atleast fine. This has been just personal experience though I do understand that other people may like it. The piano does look very nice and the sound is somewhat okay. The keys are just not it for me.
What does the A and B stand for?
I am not sure what you are referring to by A and B.
@@MerriamPianos Oh, well some advertisements say P125a. what does "a "stand for?
Great round up, be awesome to see Stu compare the Yamaha CK88 to the Roland RD88 as an affordable stage piano match up! Cheers
You're very welcome! Thank you for tuning in! We really appreciate that. :)
Gostei do Roland R08, mas. Estou interessado no Roland fp E50, e ainda vou decidir, qual dos dois, mas existe o Yamaha P225, que me serviria também.
It is certainly a tough call between these models and the FP-E50. They're all excellent, fully-loaded pianos from Roland that can be used for both home and stage use. The decision ultimately comes down to the needs and preferences of the player.
@@MerriamPianos ok, thanks....
You do such great reviews. Also, you play beautifully. Thank you!
Thanks so much for tuning in! I'll share your kind words with Stu on your behalf! :)
When plugged up to an amplifier there is a lot of key noise almost like hammers hitting wood, it's like when you press a note you hear the note and a slight thumping along with it, has anyone else notice this? I am not talking about the mechanics of the keys I'm talking about the sound itself. I know there's clicking noise from the keys which is aggravating but the piano sound has a weird after sound
I have not personally experienced this issue when running the RD models in conjunction with Roland KC keyboard amplifiers, so, unfortunately, I cannot really comment on this specific issue. Is the same sound occurring when using the onboard speakers or headphones?
@@MerriamPianos it doesn’t occur on the on board speakers I only hear it through my Roland kc 400 & I can hear it in your videos and others as well
@@MerriamPianos maybe I got a bad one I’m swapping it out for another one
I have watched a bunch of your videos. And even though your comparison videos are for the most part good. When i get to the end of them i never feel any closer to knowing which one i would rather have. And i think it is because you are a store that is representing both brands so you never really dig into any kind of strong opinion about either keyboard. Possitive or negative. After watching this long video i have no sense if which keyboard you would buy with your own money. And why.
Hi there! It is important to note that we do not always represent/carry both brands. For example, in this case, we do not carry Yamaha pianos. The reason why there is never a declaration as to which model is "better" is because that is totally a matter of subjectivity. It is up to the player to the make the final determination as to which model suits their needs and musical preferences more.
How do I get full access to all the sounds shown in your video? My Roland fp 30x sounds totally different from what I hear in your video.
The Roland Piano App offers additional features. Furthermore, it is important to note that we are capturing the direct line-out feed from the piano opposed to the sound from the onboard speakers, so there might be some sonic differences.

meus preferidos; up-132 Steinway, Bechstein Concert 8
Those are both incredible upright pianos! :)
Are you able to adjust the volume on the Kawai kdp75? Thank you :)
Yes - the KDP75 and PX770 both have volume control. :)
5:52 "rendered the world's very first electro-magnetic pickup, WAY before the guitar industry did this." Erm, no it wasn't; or at least, it's a draw with the Rickenbacker "frying pan" guitar, which utilised pickups which were designed around about 1931, a year before the Neo-Bechstein.

Thanks for tuning in!
Eight minutes is not long enough for any kind of review that properly uses Stew's talents.
We appreciate the feedback. I'll certainly pass it along to our production team. :)
Stool which one feels better under your fingertips the ES8 or the 920 in your personal opinion
Hi! Brent from Merriam Music here! Both of these Kawai pianos feature the RHIII action. To that point, the tactile playing experience between the two instruments is virtually the same. With that said, I believe that the overall music experience that the ES920 provides (i.e. tone engine, speaker system, features, etc.) is superior.
sounds ugly
Tonal preference will always be a subjective matter of course.
